抗日战争时期的1941年秋，为了阻止日军对晋察冀边区进行大扫荡，八路军某部班长马宝玉（李长华）和战士葛振林（高保成）、宋学义（李力）、胡福才（霍德集）、胡德林（张怀志）五人接受任务登上狼牙山棋盘陀主峰。 日军以三千兵力猛攻狼牙山，五位战士不畏势单力薄，凭借居高临下的有利地形，与拥有飞机、大炮的日军展开顽强的战斗：日军连续发起三次猛烈的冲锋，均被他们击退，胜利地完成了牵制日军的任务。弹尽粮绝之时，五位战士也没舍弃,抛弃,割舍,摒弃与日军进行搏杀，战斗到最后一刻。
